About the Presentation

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a perplexing disorder that makes day-to-day living and coping a unique challenge. ADHD affects approximately 3% to 7% of school-age children and 2% to 5% of adults. Children with ADHD have a greater likelihood of grade retention, school drop-out, and social and emotional adjustment difficulties. Adults with ADHD are at risk for relationship, occupational and academic problems. It is important to realize that, with understanding and support, children and adults with ADHD can thrive. Executive skill deficits are at the core of ADHD and will be discussed. Strategies that address executive skills will be addressed in this presentation as well as assessment and treatment issues.


Learning Objectives:

1. Understand basic information regarding the prevalence of ADHD in child and adult populations.

2. Understand the presumed etiology of ADHD and how it presents in various settings.

3. Understand the differential diagnosis of ADHD and how to identify comorbid conditions.

4. Understand the components of comprehensive assessment for ADHD.

5. Describe the importance of the executive skills as they underlie the observed symptoms of ADHD.

6. Apply the understanding of executive functions to interventions for ADHD.


About the Presenter:

Dr. Volpe is a Psychologist, AD/HD Consultant and the Executive Director of East End Psychological Services, P.C., a group practice with offices in Miller Place and Commack. Dr. Volpe has a 24-year history of specializing in AD/HD and related conditions. He has given AD/HD workshops and lectured across the New York area for most of this time. Moreover, he has extensive clinical expertise in the assessment and treatment of traumatic stress and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In 2010, Dr. Volpe established The Child and Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Program for ADHD and more recently, The Psychological & Educational Testing Center at East End Psychological Services, P.C. Dr. Volpe holds an appointment as Adjunct Full Professor at Hofstra University in the School of Health Professions and Human Services. Dr. Volpe has served on the Professional Advisory Board for Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorders (CHADD) of Suffolk County since 1994.
