Eating Disorders 101

Overview:

This presentation will provide a review of the DSM-5 Criteria for all Eating Disorder Diagnoses, including the less 

obvious warning signs and symptoms; biological, socio-cultural, psychological risk factors; evidenced based treatments; 

levels of care; as well as an overview of Renfrew’s Unified Treatment Model (UT). 


Preventative tips and resources will be provided to help prevent disordered eating and support those with eating disorders.

Objectives:

1. Participants will review DSM-5 criteria for the treatment of eating disorders, including common comorbid conditions.

2. Participants will be able to identify 3-5 biological, cultural, and psychological risk factors that contribute to the etiology and maintenance of eating disorder symptoms.

3. Participants will be able to identify four levels of care of eating disorder treatment (RES, PHP, IOP, and OP) including APA criteria for each level.

4. An overview of Renfrew’s Unified Treatment Model (UT) for the treatment of eating disorders will be presented. 

Presenter:

Dr. Samantha DeCaro, PsyD, is the Director of Clinical Outreach and Education at The Renfrew Center. Dr. DeCaro received her undergraduate degree in Psychology at LaSalle University, and her Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology in San Diego, CA. She has been with Renfrew since 2012, doing her post-doctoral residency at The Renfrew Center Philadelphia – Spring Lane, then holding the position of Primary Therapist, and most recently serving as Assistant Clinical Director. As Renfrew’s national spokesperson, she has been featured in the media as an eating disorder expert on various television shows, radio programs, podcasts, and online magazines. She is a frequent lecturer, a member of the International Association of Eating Disorders (iaedp), and serves as the alumni representative for The Renfrew Center of Philadelphia – Spring Lane.
